New Media has helped shape social networking life in an entire distinctive manner. To understand better what is social networking according to Will Kenton it is "the use of Internet-based social media sites to stay connected with friends, family, colleagues, customers, or clients. Social networking can have a social purpose, a business purpose, or both, through sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, among others". It helps us stay connected with someone within seconds whether it is by texting through the several social media apps, doing phone or video calls such as WhatsApp or Skype. Not only does it help with staying connecting with others, it also helps businesses to increase brand recognition. One example that I mostly find interesting for me is that before purchasing  a product, I see different social media influences try on different makeup brands to see what they think of this particular branded makeup. It not only helps influences get some sort of compensation for it, but me to try and see if it is actually worth buying. And most importantly it helps the company promote their brands voice and content as well. The more people they can reach out too, the better they will have at retaining new customers.

According to statista.com, in the Unites States Facebook is the top social network with 769.16 million mobile users accessing the Facebook app in September 2019 Alone and during that month the average Facebook user spends about an average 769.16 minutes on the social media platform. Following for second place is TikTok with 498.09 million users, and third place is again Facebook messenger with 335.51 million users.

Even though there are a lot of benefits to social networking, there is also a downfall to it as well. According to Dr. Marilyn Mitchell Social networking is causing nothing but a distraction. Where one student stated “When I have my phone out, it makes me feel like nothing else is going on around me. I use social media as a way to feel popular, important, and also just to fit in. My friends and I always compare ourselves to each other, wondering who has more Facebook friends or Twitter followers... Ever since I got a smartphone I have been distracted from everything. I watch television less, do homework less, and even spend less time with my friends and family.” As we can see here every time we have some time to do something such as studying or doing chores around the house or even something more important we spend countless hours just using our phones for social networking. We don't realize this but it is becoming very addicting to everyone. If we reduce our time from social media's we can focus on our mental health better, and it can help reduce depression, anxiety and loneliness.

Overall, I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages. We just have to control ourselves and just know whats right from wrong. Having more and more new apps and other technologies will help us by making our lives more easier as well as overcome many problems that we are facing in this earth. Some examples I can think of are ways we might avoid natural disasters, to helping many other new industries, to helping cure a disease. The things technologies can do are endless.
